Ch.22
Okay, so this will be my very last blog.
All I have to say is that I loved reading about Gandhi because I think he was a great man, and I love how he believed in non-violence.
"Non-violence means conscious suffering. It does not mean submission to the will of the evil-doer, but it means the pitting of one's whole goal against the will of the tyrant...It is possible for a single individual to defy the whole might of an unjust empire to save his honor, his religion, his soul" (Strayer p1095). This quote is simply amazing. Even though he was attacked many times while fighting for the right of his people, he never once used violence against his "enemies." I think that people like him and Martin Lurther King Jr have done so much more to really help their people instead of all the wars that have been fought. This only proves that there is no need to use guns and violence in order to fight for a cause and actually win.
Ch.23
Capitalism and Feminism ar the two things that ought my attention in this chapter.
Women were not treated equally as man. They had to fight for their rights and to be treated equally and I think that we are still fighting for that equality. It has been proven that women are still earning less than men, even if they have the exact same qualifications. It is sad to know that we are in living in the 21st century and we are still seeing inequalities simply because if the gender differences.

Reflection #7 Ch.20 & 21
Ch.20
"I was told I was fighting a war that would end all wars, but that wasn't the case" (Strayer p981). WWI also known as the Great War was a war intended to prevent future wars from happening but instead, It made things worse. I don't think that a war is a solution to a problem but people back then did not think that way. However, I think the alliances were a great idea because they would defend each other in times of war.
The depression came after the war, this reminded me of the resection we had in the United States after the war in Iraq. The United States spent a lot of money in the war and the economy was really bad after. This happened after WWI and again in 2008 in the United states.
Ch.21
So, even though I don't believe that communism is a good thing, I like the idea of equality. Of course it is not equality when the people at the top have full power and the "working class" has no power and they are all living in poverty. However, Cuba for example, i've met people from there who are doctors and are practicing in Mexico. They have a really good education system apparently because they are very good at what they do. Of course that they cannot make as much money in their country as they are making in Mexico but I think Communism is not that bad.

Reflection #6 Ch. 16, 17, 18 & 19
Ch.16
This chapter I really like, this is because the section about the Abolition of slavery was in it. Slavery was viewed as something wrong and went agains many people's beliefs. It is sad to imagine what slaves went through. I don't understand how people had the heart to treat other human beings as animals and I also can't believe how much time it had to pass before anyone did anything to end slavery. That is a horrible thing to do. We are human beings and we should never treat each other like that again. That is just horrible!
Ch.17
The Industrial Revolution created new jobs and marked the beginning of new technology. There were next machines that produced a lot more than what people could produce by themselves. The machines began to take over, and to do the work that was done by the man (humans). I find this very interesting because if we look at how much technology has transformed our lives, we can see that the more technology we have, the less physical work we do, and I personally think that is a really bad thing. What will happen the day that those machines no longer work and we can't fix them, and we don't know how to do the job that the machines do?
Ch.18
In this chapter, I really like how the images shown on pages 832 and 883 reflect the way of thinking of the English. The image of the octopus with eleven hands and the head of an english man is representing greed and selfishness.
The image on page 883 is a representation of social Darwinism.

Reflection #5 Ch.13, 14 & 15
Ch.13
The story of Dona Marina, Between Two Worlds is a fascinating story. I personally think that she did what she thought was the right thing to do. She might have been protecting someone from the Cortez. She might have also helped Cortez because she did not like the way she was being treated by the Maya Chieftain, and she decided to help Cortez to get revenge.
Ch.14
The silver and global commerce: Now this is something I didn't know. The silver trade was something that opened the doors to global trade. The majority of the silver was found in Bolivia and some in Japan. Soon after the discovery, the silver was being distributed all around the globe. I think this is fascinating because silver was not a necessity but more of a luxury and yet it was so popular. This reminds me of the modern world, how luxury items are in such high demand nowadays, even in some poor countries people manage to obtain luxury items, more than those that they really need.
Ch.15
The section about modern science was a very interesting section of the chapter. This was the part where Strayer talks bout "The Birth of Modern Science." A group of people took the initiative and said that thing were no longer going to "rely on external authority of the bible" (Staryer p740). Instead, things were going to reply more on science. They had different views and ideas that went against what the bible said. This changed a lot of things.

Reflection #4 Ch. 9, 11 & 12
Ch.9
I found this chapter very interesting. I took an Islam faith class in the Spring semester and I have to say that I learned a lot about the Islam faith. Islam is very similar to Christianity. Muhammad was the messenger of Allah and the muslim community see him as a prophet, just like they believe that Jesus was a prophet as well. I personally think that Islam is a beautiful religion.
Ch.11
I enjoyed reading about pastoral societies. I like that women were not treated as inferior among pastoral societies. They were given the opportunity to obtain skills and were treated the same as the men.
Ch.12
The beginning of this chapter is intense. We now now that Christopher Columbus was a bad man and that he did not discover America. He killed and used the native americans as slaves. He took advantage of them and took away what belonged to them.

Reflection #3: Ch.7, 8 & 10
Ch.7
In this chapter I liked learning about the sand and sea trading routes, and the silk road. The Sand and Sea Roads were trading routes. The Sand Road went
from Africa to the Mediterranean Sea, and the some of the things they traded
were slaves and ivory. The people traveled by camel because they had to travel
by desserts and camels don’t need a lot of water. The Sea Road was another
trading route that went from Arica to India and China. This road was traveled
by sea in big boats. Some of the things traded by the people in this road were
Ivory, spice, and minerals. The Silk Road did not only trade goods like silk and gold, but they
also spread the Buddhist belief and even helped people convert. The Silk Road
went through China and India, and as the people traveled by food, carts, and
animals, they spread the Buddhist belief among the people they traveled with
and the people they came in contact with.
Ch.8
I have to say that I found the picture of the foot binding on page 372 very disturbing. I can imagine the pain the little girls felt as their foot grew and that makes me feel very sad. I personally think that there was no need for them to do that.
I also did not like reading about how women had to be subordinate to the men during the song Dynasty. "The boy leads the girl, the girl follows the boy; the duty of husbands to be resolute and wives to be docile begins with this" (Strayer p371). I strongly disagree with this, I come from a culture where till this day, some men in the country I come from (Mexico) still see and treat women as inferior. This is something I do not tolerate and strongly disagree with. I believe in equality and both men and women should be treated equally. No man is superior than a woman.
Ch.10
In this chapter, the thing that caught my attention was the section about the crusades. I think that they could have done things differently. There was no need to force people to believe in something. How is forcing someone to believe in something (especially religion) considered a true believer. I think that the roman catholic church is paying for the mistakes they did in the past, when they imposed their beliefs onto people. There were a lot of innocent people affected by this and I being a catholic myself feel a bit embarrassed for what the crusades did in the past.

Reaction#2: Ch.3,4, 5 & 6
Chapter 3- State and Empire
-I have to say that I did not know how big the Persian empire was. It is amazing to know that they were the largest empire a long time ago. The greeks also had a big empire but not as big as that of the Persians.
Chapter 4- Culture and Religion
-This chapter I found very interesting because it talks about different religions and culture. I find Confucianism very interesting. I feel like if Confucius had been given the opportunity to incorporate his ideas into their political system, things would have been a lot different in China. He believed in respect and obedience to the superiors, but he also believed that the people with power or at the top should serve as role models to those at the bottom, and according to him, that would only make them more obedient. Daoism is also very similar but Daoists believed that the power between the sexes should be balanced, and Confucianism believed in a hierarchy where the male had more power than the woman.
Chapter 5- Society and Inequality
-After reading this chapter, I felt sad and angry at the same time. This is because of the class differences in China, the class and cast in India, and Roman slavery. It is so sad to read about how a group of people are treated differently because of the family they are born into. The cast system in India was horrible because the wealthy took advantage of those who lived in poverty. Roman slavery was just sad. I still can't believe how many slaves they had, and what is more impressive is how even the low class people owned slaves.
Chapter 6- Africa and Americas
-I found this chapter very interesting. Learning about Africa and the early people living there was very interesting. I also liked reading about the Mayan people and being Mexican makes me even more interested in learning more about them.
